One of the most noticeable things about our PoW Ambassadors is the way they grow in confidence across the year. It’s what sits at the heart of everything we do – helping young people realise what’s possible, feel proud of who they are, and believe in their ability to make a difference.
Our third and final full development day of the year-long programme was hosted by the brilliant team at Yarm Prep – a huge thank you for such a warm welcome (and for those enormous cookies, which did not go unnoticed!).
We kicked off the day with David from Cats-UK, who guided the children through a fascinating session on emotional awareness and regulation – helping them understand how their bodies respond to stress, and what they can do to manage it. There were so many curious questions, we could’ve kept going for hours… but our next speaker had flown in from the Arctic, so we had to press on!
Katie, a physicist originally from Middlesbrough, joined us live from Svalbard where she studies the Northern Lights. Her story – from Teesside to the Arctic Circle – showed our ambassadors that science, adventure and impact are well within reach. (Also, not many people can say they’ve had an astronaut drop into their workplace. Katie can.)
We also had a surprise visit from Sonia, who’s currently on maternity leave from Spark, along with her daughter Elodie – a future leader in the making! That’s the real Power of Women in action – showing up, leading with love, and inspiring the next generation while doing it.
The afternoon could’ve been a tough act to follow, but our ambassadors stepped up once again.
They worked in teams to identify issues affecting their communities and had a go at creating a structured social media post using Clips – turning thought into action.
The conversations were brilliant, varied and real. Although we can confirm: school football politics might just be universal.
Power of Women is a community interest company dedicated to building confidence, creating opportunities and unlocking potential for young people across the Tees Valley.
Spearheaded by the Late Professor Jane Turner OBE DL, this campaign embodies Jane’s determination and commitment to improving life chances of girls in the Tees Valley region. We want to give girls and young women of the region the inspiration, tools and support that they need to take control over the direction of their own lives, and to not just survive, but thrive.
