Name and Job Role: Reshma Begum, PoW Board Member and Skills Policy and Insights at The North East Mayoral Strategic Authority
Super POWer: Working with businesses across the region, spanning all sectors and sizes, gives me a real insight into current and future workforce needs. This helps me to identify opportunities for our young people and future workforce, how they might navigate their prospects and where aspirations can be supported. My role also involves navigating and influencing policy and strategy for the region in business support and skills which ties in with our ambitions at POW to influence policy and decision-making for the purpose of community and skills development.
Fun Fact: I can speak multiple languages including conversational Hindi which I learned from watching way too much Bollywood TV and cinema growing up!
What I love about POW: The positive difference we make to young people. Having grown up in a town whose deprivation indicators are closely matched to Middlesbrough/Teesside, I can appreciate through lived experience just how crucial programmes like ours can be for young people. I love that we are changing lives through raising aspirations, building confidence, and creating cohesion and allyship among young people.
Power of Women is a community interest company dedicated to building confidence, creating opportunities and unlocking potential for young people across the Tees Valley.
Spearheaded by the Late Professor Jane Turner OBE DL, this campaign embodies Jane’s determination and commitment to improving life chances of girls in the Tees Valley region. We want to give girls and young women of the region the inspiration, tools and support that they need to take control over the direction of their own lives, and to not just survive, but thrive.
