Charlotte Barugh. CILEX LAWYER, ASSOCIATE - JACKSONS
Pragmatic. Collaborative. Determined.
Caramel Frappe.
A dancer.
Hard-working, chatty and usually involved in organising something.
Learning to be confident speaking up and trusting my own judgement.
One of the biggest challenges in my career has been balancing work with family challenges, particularly after losing my mam. There were times when I questioned whether I was good enough and felt overwhelmed trying to manage everything.
What helped me keep going was remembering how far I’d already come, focusing on continuous improvement and having supportive people around me who encouraged me to keep going.
No two days are ever the same. I might be advising clients, drafting documents, negotiating settlements, managing cases or responding to lots of emails.
The best part of my job is helping clients find practical solutions to complex problems and getting a positive outcome for them.
And something that might surprise you? Most of my time is spent helping people avoid court rather than preparing for it!
You don’t need to know exactly what you want to do straight away. Confidence comes with experience, and it’s okay to learn as you go.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions, make mistakes and try new things. Some of the biggest opportunities come from stepping outside your comfort zone.
Everyone’s journey is different, and success isn’t a race. Try not to get caught up comparing yourself to other people.
Give new experiences a go, even if they feel a little outside your comfort zone. Some of the best experiences come from trying something new.
Being able to listen, explain your ideas clearly and build relationships will help you in almost any career.
Lawyers spend all day arguing in court. In reality, a lot of my job is about problem-solving, negotiating and helping people reach a practical solution before it gets that far.
