Karla Edwards

Director of The Protection Parent, Newby

Sector: Insurance

After only two years in the insurance industry, Karla Edwards took the leap and became her own boss when she opened her own insurance brokerage, The Protection Parent.

Where do you call home?

Newby, Middlesbrough.

Tell us about your role?

I am director of insurance brokerage The Protection Parent.

How did you get to where you are today?

I was brand new to the industry in 2019. I developed a real passion for insurance and knew I wanted something different. Over the two years, I learnt the knowledge I needed to feel confident in my role and decided to begin my own legacy, creating The Protection Parent.

What struggles or obstacles did you face along the way?

The biggest challenge I had was having the belief and confidence to make the leap into starting my own business. Sometimes you lack faith in yourself and think you need the reassurance of other people – you don’t. You just need to gain more trust in your own judgement and learn to always trust your gut.

Describe the moment you first got a feel for success?

The first pay I received as my own boss was a feeling I will never forget. I had spent so long worrying I might not be able to provide for my family so when I reaped the rewards of my hard work for the first time, I was elevated.

Do you have any advice for aspiring young females?

Never let anyone make you feel you are not big enough to fulfil your dreams; you can do anything. If you believe in what you want and you work hard enough for it then you can achieve everything you want. Do not allow to be put in a box by people who are threatened by your ability, your potential relies on your own faith in you.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Treat yourself the way you would like your own daughter to be treated. Love yourself, even the flaws, and understand that this is a journey that is not meant to be a straight road. You are going to have bumps, diversions and breakdowns, but that just makes arriving at the destination even more fulfilling.

What three words inspire you and encourage a positive path?

Keep moving forward.
